NaNoWriMo is upon us once again and just at the last minute, my characters mutinied and are doing their own thing. My story went from Sci-Fi to Fantasy in a hot second. This might have taken the wind out of my sail but I assure you, this ship will not sink.

November is going to be a month of victory and triumph. By the end, my goal is to have a rough draft, if not an official first draft, to work on. My plan is to write about 10k per week. Since I only have one day off--or, in a good week, 1.5 days--to do this, I am aiming for five to seven hours of solid writing time. I will update this blog, sporadically once a week, to update on my progress. As per the tentative schedule, that will put it on Fridays. The format will be something along the lines of hours spent, words written, challenges and triumphs.

tips

Below are five tips, in no particular order of importance, to help you get the best out of NaNoWriMo.
  1. Join nanowrimo.org if you haven't already (You can thank me by finally putting that idea onto paper. I also accept cyber-cookies).
  2. Just Write. Take a notebook with you wherever you go. This can be physical or digital. It does not matter. What matters is that you write.
  3. Make time but don't deprive yourself of sleep. Cutting into your sleep time can increase your stress level and lead to a less productive and less creative day. Instead, cut into the time you spend watching films or scrolling through your social media feeds. (Yes, I know you’ll be an episode behind This is Us and you missed the whole season of Game of Thrones and glitter tongue are a thing now but so was sniffing cinnamon and we know where that went. If you play your card right, some human will be antagonizing over not being able to devour your work sometime soon.)
  4. Show gratitude. Take a minute to write a thank-you card. It can be to yourself, your family, or even that weird roommate who is always playing WOW and has maxed out your data so you are forced to open WORD and *sign* stop procrastinating and get to work. (Look, if you both love playing MMORPGs, then you need to get yourself to the park or library now. Oh, don't forget to thank a librarian. They are awesome).
  5. Enjoy what you do. Realize there is no set way to NaNo and have fun writing. You are only limited by your imagination.
